.sm file help

I apologize in advance as this probably doesnt rly need a topic but i dont know what to do...

I made a stepchart to a song today spent about a good 5 hours on it everything was fine i finished it, saved it, played it, but there was something i needed to change in the sm file itself so i opened it up to find it completely blank.

when i load stepmania my chart for the song is there but if i were to copy the folder for the chart it appears in the editor with all blank difficultys in other folders. i checked the cache of all my songs and apparently my chart or song or folder doesnt exist at all.
i cant copy it or the chart is gone, i cant change anything in the sm file cuz its completely blank.

HELP PLEASE i rly dont wanna have to do that whole chart over again it took way too long, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know how to help you, but did you seriously do the entire thing in one go without saving until the end?

no i saved several times during the time i was making it which was between 9am and 2pm today, during that whole time i never closed the stepmania program till afterwards when i saved it and checked the sm file. i still havent figured it out yet....

My best guess is that you're looking at the old version of the sm file. The newer one is probably in the compatibility files thingy.

Start -> Search -> nameofsimfile.sm

it still apparently doesnt exist, i tried taking an sm file from another sim and saving over it and that doesnt i tried saving while only the music file is in the folder and that doesnt work its not saving it to an sm file at all appaerently.

Are you using vista? If so, is your folder in C:/Program Files/ ? I have had similar problems if this is true. Vista doesn't like you copying/editing in the .sm directory. Again, if this is the case, I would recommend copying your stepmania directory to My Documents, open both copies of stepmania up and copy the song step for step.

actually its windows 7, but ur most likely right because they are so similar ill give it a try

I believe deactivating UAC accomplishes the same task also. With UAC deactivated you should be able to overwrite/rewrite files on the system without issue.

UAC=User Account Control and can be found in Windows Security Center.

thanks Dman what u said was exactly the problem, sadly i couldnt recover the simfile but i can save .sm's now.
Thank u everyone for your suggestions i completely remade the file cuz i had no choice but for anyone who is interested in what the file was u can download it here:

Note that the file has not been converted to ogg or under 5mb yet, definitely the best file i ever made...
