Explanation for what happened...

Postby Mazrim » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:44 am

So, on Saturday, we noticed the website went down again. Again, I had no idea exactly why. On Sunday I noticed it was still down so it wasn't a temporary thing, so I checked out the server host and domain host to see if there was anything wrong. Both showed $0 owed and no downtime. I asked Sean to take a closer look and over Monday nothing had come out of it until we were notified that the domain name had expired, another fault of my getting a new credit card last year (which caused the downtime we had in December).

After dealing with a very badly designed website with hostway, our domain name host, I was finally able this morning to update the info and renew the domain. Within 2 minutes, I was able to visit the site again.

I apologize for the extreme delays in getting the site back up, and I PROMISE there won't be any more downtime due to me...until 2013 when my credit card expires.

Again, I'm sorry. :(

The stupid thing was that there wasn't a placeholder page put there from the hosting company. I have seen that happen with a few sites.

Naturally, if that had happened I would have done a quick whois search and seen the expired domain.

Sucks that your domain registrar has a poor system for updating billing info. :(

The best part, Dennis...
The notification box on Hostway when you log in? 0 messages. You'd think they'd give one. Balance owing: $0, Payment due: $0. Huh.

Media Temple (our server host) went out of their way to warn and tell us the problem last time, and are who told me this time what happened too after I asked if it was on their end. (Chris also did, but through facebook on the same day)

Needless to say, don't use hostway, people. :P

I had another scare this morning. I nearly blew a gasket when I saw an email on my phone from hostway informing me that the renewal of the domain had not been approved. I sent a reply asking what in the world could cause that to happen as I had triple checked everything and changed all information to be up to date. They then informed that it was a mistake in the system and to ignore it. I have received 2 more automated emails this morning approving and rejecting the renewal...wow.

Yikes!

Only thing I can say now is the obvious - "Make sure you watch your credit card statement like a hawk!"
